EAA Chapter 1327
January 5, 2012
Discovery Space,
Ron Bowman, Presiding
Treasurer Dave Dix reported
$1334.00 in the treasury, dues ($12) now due for 2012.
Randy Kilmer reminded us that Ed
Foster, UNV Assistant Director, is still seeking funds to complete the new
Pilot’s Lounge in the hangar area. He also described the furniture offered by
Doug Wolf of Wolf Furniture. Tom Houseknecht may be
willing to install Randy’s gift of a P-51 ceiling fan.
Our Liability Insurance costs are
up to $225 per year, and our squadron fee is $50. The only change to officers
is Steve Dershimer taking over for Malcolm Morrison as
Young Eagles Coordinator.
Ron handed the meeting over to
Art Heim, Director of the new downtown State College Discovery Space. This is a
science museum primarily for those under 13, to be a stimulant for thinking
about science, with evolving displays and interactive vignettes. (Note, the big kids of the chapter really enjoyed playing with
many exhibits.)
Mr. Heim had invited us to hold
our meeting there to become familiar with this new facility, and also see the
Flight Simulator we had contributed. He mentioned that young boys, especially,
are very aggressive with the controls of the simulator. Some appropriate means
of proper control manipulation is being sought to enhance the learning
experience while protecting the simulator.
They have their own weather
station, and can produce forecasts from their own instrumentation on the roof. Mr.
Heim also introduced Margaret Ruff, a “lynch pin in the organization”.
Joe Loomis suggested a wind
tunnel as an aerodynamic entity to operate.
They would love to have
volunteers, call 234-0200!!!
Future events:
Reedsville next weekend for EAA flyin breakfast, perhaps a ski-in sometime in February, Gary
Hile may be having a shop meeting with Chapter 518,
and
Louis Watt, a retired Marine aviator who served in Vietnam Nam, will be guest
speaker March 1st.
Next meeting is at UNV on the first
Thursday of February, 7:00 pm.
